The year was 1999 and things were ruff. I was the entire crew for the Dickey Betts Band. Unloading the truck, set-up the stage, roll in the amps and drums etc.. Then set up some empty guitar cases to use as a tuning area. Wait there all day untill the show.
I played drums on Southbound with the Dickey Betts Band this particular night @ the House of Blues in New Orleans. I played the song and we did a long bombbastic ending! Magic! then I went back to my area and began tuning guitar's again. I felt a spirit in the air that night and I think about it all the time. That's why it all started in New Orleans.... ____________________ Frankie Lombardi |

Great that you shared that with all of us. So often us common people wonder when, where and how these magical things come about.
It is always nice to know that magic is in the air....somewhere!
Thanks for sharing Frankie! ____________________ Happy Trails..........

I went down to Gretna, LA to see you guys in October 07' - the night before the show Blues Traveler played a 2.5 hour show at The House Of Blues in New Orleans...it was awesome to see the two shows back to back.
I was on cloud nine after dancing through the show in the sunshine and having an opportunity to hang out with you guys after the show and walking around the festival, etc...I took the ferry back to New Orleans after I left you guys, still dancing and no doubt beaming right on through to the heavens, because that's what Dickey's music does to me...well, there's more to it than that, but I'll refrain.
I decided to take a stroll up to the cathedral and continued on to Bourbon St. I had on the dress I choose the blocks for and my friend, KT of Vital Signs, block printed especially for me of you guys; it has guitars, a drummer, singer, dancer, etc...I refer to it as my Dickey Betts New Orleans dress...it is fabulously fun to dance in! I wore it last year to Fall River, MA and had an Isadora Duncan good time at that venue! I saw you after the show and told you I wasn't going to follow you guys to Rindgefield, as I was headed to Maine.
Anyway, back to New Orleans...so I'm walk into this little store to buy a water and I'm standing there and the woman in front of me at the register, suddenly turns to me and hisses "Be careful of vampires, their everywhere." I being in my beaming state of mind, just looked at her and continued in my state of blissful light, didn't reply. Just then the clerk who had had his back turned, as he was rummaging for something behind the counter, turns and he's this ghoul, who just looks at me and chuckles and laughs this sinister laugh...I paid for my water and walked back out into the street. I was near the beginning by this point. So, I'm walking by this t-shirt with a really cool symbol on the back and I say, "That's a really cool symbol.", as I walk by...the guy, with a distinctive New England accent, calls after me, "Hey, that's a really beautiful dress." So, I stop and tell him thanks and ask him where he is from, as I recognize a Northern accent. He introduces himself and tells me he's from Maine. He asked me where my friends were and I told him that I had just left them, referring to you guys.
I was drinking water all night, but I had these "fun tickets" that had to be used before I left, so I asked him if he wanted a drink. After I went to leave and he offered to walk with me. We had a nice walk up St. Charles looking at all the old verses new buildings...he picked and gave me flowers. I didn't think any thing of it...he was just this kid. I hang out with my children and their friends quite frequently when home, I was comfortable.
Long story short...I too felt the spirit in New Orleans and had walked to the Our Lady of Guatalupe and International Shrine of St. Jude, earlier before the show. I anointed my feet with holy oil and said the prayer that went with it. I had place holy water on my head when I entered the shrine. I said some prayer for humanities suffering, that it not be in vain, etc...lit some candles to the same effect. Let's just say I believe I walk in the light...and let's just leave it that I too, not only felt the spirit in New Orleans, but encountered one.
My perception of reality has been altered. I have always had visions, seen ghosts, fairies, gnomes, lots of different angels, etc...my whole life. As of that venue to see you guys for one of the last shows of the season, let's just say that this event that took place later that same evening, changed my life's focus. I believe it was my personal wake-up call...
I don't know that it started in New Orleans, but new purpose has.

I have lived in New Olreans my whole life and it does have a certain magic...
I know Mr. Betts has played here many times since the free shows at Audubon park and of course the Warehouse days, starting in 1969...I have been to them all.
I hope Dickey always feels our spirit when he graces us with his presence...we sure do feel his.
He is one of our medicine men...his magic is unmistaken. His music goes straight to the soul.
So carry on, Ramblin' Man. ____________________ Mike...Always havin' a good time down on the bayou. |
